TREES – FRIEND OR FOE?

Trees make our environment so much nicer. Through the seasons they provide us with interest and beauty but unchecked they can also cause structural damage to buildings. Branches of trees can cause physical damage to roofs and guttering, but trouble may also be brewing out of sight under the ground.

Tree roots can spread up to three times the height of the tree and may damage or block drains - old drains being particularly at risk. Leaking drains can make the situation worse as tree roots will grow towards the moisture. Suddenly you have a blocked drain, your patio has cracks in it or worse still the cracks are in your house – it could be that trees near to your property are causing these problems.

Tree roots take moisture from the ground which, in areas with a clay soil, can cause it to ‘shrink’. This can undermine the foundations of your house, especially in an older property where foundations weren’t dug as deep. The first sign of this movement is usually cracks in the walls and should be acted upon immediately.

A Structural Engineer will be able to tell you whether nearby trees are to blame and can offer you the professional advice you need to solve the problem - or the reassurance that you can continue to enjoy your trees without them affecting your property.
