FROM HOSTESS BADGE TO CREATING ALGORITHMS FOR ROBOTS

20 Nov 2018

When I was in the Girl Guides I remember my pride at being awarded the ‘Little House Emblem’ for which I had achieved among others, the Laundress, Homemaker and Child Nurse badges…well, it was the 1970’s. Girl guiding has moved with the times and activities today reflect the changes within society over the years. Last summer saw the advent of a new set of badges and activities with science and engineering at their core aimed at all three sections within Guiding - so available to girls aged from 5-18. It is hoped that these innovations will encourage girls in the STEM subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths and tackle misconceptions that these subjects are ‘for boys’.

Investigating a little further, I discovered that a group of Guides from Taunton had visited Hinkley Point C where a new nuclear power station is under construction. Their hosts were four female employees of EDF Energy and Tier 1 Contractors who answered a wealth of questions on how a Nuclear Power Station works and allowed the girls a rare insight into one of Europe’s biggest construction sites.

So, the Hostess badge has been ‘retired’ and girls are now being encouraged to look at a wider world in which to be themselves and fulfil their potential, in whatever area of life they choose.
